Chapter Twenty-One

Melissa.

Melissa.

Ocean blue eyes greet me.

“Mom,” I gasp, raising my head from her lap.

“Yes, my love,” she replies with a honeyed voice.

I look at her in disbelief. She’s here in Sinzar?

“What’s wrong, my dear?” Mom tilts her head. Her long wavy hair swirls when she moves.

It really is her.

But that must mean I am dreaming. I don’t know why, but I just know things are not real when she’s around. It doesn’t matter.

“Nothing is wrong,” I say, shaking my head. Everything is all right. My mom is here. I throw my arms around her immediately.

“Mom, I missed you.” I almost cry when I say those words. She runs a hand on my back, comforting me. I part to look at her again.

“Melissa, you made it here. I can’t believe you came to Sinzar,” she says, tucking my hair behind my ears. I am surprised at her words, but something catches my eye.

I still at the tall figure standing by the door.

“Who is that?” I ask with trembling voice. The stranger is spying on us. I can’t quite see his face in the darkness.

Mom smiles, turning to the man at the door without fear. “Darling, come meet our daughter.” She offers her hand to the man.

My heart lurches. That man is my father?

“She’s fine. Look, Melissa is all right,” Mom says with a sweet smile. “Come back to me. I miss you so much.”

There is a palpable ache and longing in her voice. The man doesn’t respond to her call, nor does he move from his spot.

Mom frowns and approaches him. “We’re both well. Come home to me, please.”

Now that’s a lie. A cruel one at that. How can anything be well when she’s gone? Mom is dead. The fact pounds like a hammer to my head. It’s painful but that’s the truth. I’ve spent many years denying it. And now here she is in my dream trying to convince my ‘father’ otherwise. I watch silently as Mom continues her desperate plea.

“I’m alright,” she says, reaching out to him.

The man stirs as she touches his face. They both gaze into each other’s eyes. His arms move around her.

Oh no.

I get up quickly to pull Mom away from this dangerous stranger. I stop short in my steps. My mouth falls open.

My sweet and kind mother is never stringent with her smiles. She gave it away freely to anyone, even to those cruel people in our neighbourhood who calls her ‘Diana the crazy lady’. I know she does that so others wouldn’t worry for her, especially my dear aunt. She’s become so good at hiding her feelings from people. Not to me though, her own daughter. I’ve always noticed a certain melancholy and sadness in each one of her smiles.

But it’s different this time.

A prickle of tear falls down my eyes. I’ve never seen Mom look so happy. The man holds her in his embrace. He is just as delighted to see her. Two lost souls, finding home in each other.

I stalk behind mom slowly and finally get a better look at him.
